Dallas College Richland Campus can claim the title of having made the best video game in Texas. It was quite the whirlwind of events to say the least. When Christopher Curra sent an email to us students searching for volunteers for a SkillsUSA competition in Houston, it was the first time anyone had heard of the event or association. No one had any idea of what to expect, advisers included.

Edward Trahan, Richland Campus’ basketball team forward, was selected to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game May 20 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas due to his outstanding performance. According to rlcsports.com, Trahan was selected as the NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week Feb.16.

Tryouts underway for T-Duck men’s soccer team

Richland’s men’s soccer team has finished its training session for this year. Now they are preparing for the beginning of the tryouts to field a team for next season. At press time, the tryouts were scheduled to start on April 30. “This semester the team plays many friendly games against universities in order to strengthen their competitive level, besides trying to find an option for a scholarship,”head men’s soccer coach Raul Herrera said.

Richland’s Thunderducks baseball team defeated the Cedar Valley Suns 15-11 at Richland on March 25. A seven-run rally in the third inning was enough for the team coached by Jimmy Brenneman to get the win. The T-Ducks were up 11-0 in the first third of the game and it seemed that the victory could be smooth. However, Cedar Valley would not give up so easily.

Richland Campus of Dallas College has a new head volleyball coach for the upcoming season that starts August 1. Grace Wells was born in Beijing, China and lived there for 20 years. Coach Wells is a former professional volleyball player in her country. She competed in the USA, Australia, Poland, North Korea and France. She was selected to play on the national team after seven years of experience as a player.

FC Dallas won a great victory at Toyota Stadium in Frisco 2-1 against Sporting Kansas City on March 18, Matchday 4 of the Major League Soccer 2023. Alan Velasco and Jesus Ferreira scored for the locals. Daniel Sallói pushed across the only goal for the visitors. FC Dallas and Kansas City both played in a 4-3-3 system, but Sporting Kansas City was the team that took advantage creating several opportunities to score. Coached by Peter Vermes, Kansas City started the game without scoring one goal in its statistics, but during the first half, they would break the zero.

Dallas College Richland Campus’ very own Ed Trahan was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men’s Basketball player of the week. Trahan stands at 6-foot-4 and is a sophomore forward from Cypress, Texas. Trahan has averaged 20 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 67% from the field as the T-Ducks won three conference games last week.

The Richland Campus men’s baseball team is off to a fast start, winning five games out of the first seven this season. While it is true the season is just beginning, it is very important to accumulate as many wins as possible in order to qualify for the playoffs. The season consists of 56 games. First pitch was on Jan. 27. The season is scheduled to end on May 6. The Thunderducks participate in the DAC Conference with Dallas College campuses Eastfield, Cedar Valley, Mountain View, Brookhaven and North Lake. There are two regional conferences and the top six teams qualify for the postseason, in which any team that loses two games will be eliminated.

Men’s basketball focused on conference games

The Thunderduck men´s basketball team is finishing the regular season, and they are ready to focus on the next step, the Dallas Conference Athletic League. In the previous 14 games during the regular season, the team coached by Jon Havens has won eight games and lost six. Now in the conference games, they will face 10 teams in order to qualify for a spot in the upcoming national tournament. According to Havens, the team is working hard on improving different aspects, even more, when the team had around one month off.

“No other men’s soccer team in the nation has won four consecutive championships. So, we are very proud of our student athletes and coach Raul Herrera,” Dr. Kay Eggleston, president of Dallas College Richland Campus, said during the championship ring ceremony on Aug. 23.

The 2021 Richland men’s soccer team and its head coach, Raul Herrera, were recognized in a ring ceremony held in the El Paso Student Lounge.
