STUDENT VIEWPOINTS: Opinions on TikTok ban

Chronicle Staff | June 12, 2024
Donaldo Gutierrez: “I don’t want it to happen because it’s a big part of our culture now. Like, the younger people. I understand the security risk behind it with the whole China thing, but it does seem a little excessive, I would say.” Hector Mundo: “It’s a good thing in some ways because there’s many teens that are our age that are just wasting their time constantly swiping. I believe it’s a good thing in that regard, but at the same time, it’s bad because we should have freedom to have these things, such as...
Time may be running out for TikTok in the United States.

The clock counts down for TikTok

Rolando Hernandez, Staff Writer | June 10, 2024
President Joe Biden on April 25 signed a bill that would ban TikTok. The bill gives ByteDance, a Chinese company that owns TikTok, until Jan. 19, 2025, the day before the Presidential inauguration to sell it to an American company. If it fails to be sold within the time frame, it would be completely banned in the U.S. The former President Donald Trump, who is now the presumptive nominee for the 2024 Republican nomination, opposes the current president’s ban even though in 2020 he supported it...

Best and worst of the Super Bowl commercials

Best and worst of the Super Bowl commercials

February 24, 2024
"Uber Eats" -- Despite this commercial getting backlash for using the disease of life-threatening food allergy as humor, I think it was funny regardless. It features David and Victoria Beckham, country singer Jelly Roll, halftime show performer Usher and the duo of Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer. As a die-hard “Friends” fan myself, this ad made me smile and that is all I’m looking for. Grade: A "Temu" -- Temu aired a repeated spot featuring an animated commercial depicting...
President Joe Biden and Taylor Swift. Could the Swift Effect be just what it takes to save Biden's floundering candidacy?

The Swift Effect

Aislyn Smith, Editor-in-Chief | February 18, 2024
Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift has been popular for years, both for her music and her journey, attracting fans and business alike. Recently, she has become popular for an entirely different reason, which fans are calling the Swift Effect. Essentially, Swift’s association with brands and people has greatly impacted how they are perceived by the public and, even more importantly, how popular they are. This has resulted in huge monetary and political gains, all simply because she showed support in...
