Dallas College students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields have access to support through the STEM League organization. This organization connects students with peers, staff, professionals and faculty to guide them on their academic journey. The STEM League aims to introduce students to the various aspects of STEM and provide resources to navigate their chosen fields.
Prospective members can join the STEM League through the eConnect STEM webpage on the Dallas College website by completing the required forms. After submitting the forms, students receive information via their Outlook email accounts. The STEM League also maintains a presence at student life events and career fairs to raise awareness and connect with potential members.
The STEM League offers information about opportunities such as internships and research. They partner with programs like the minINTERN, which allow students to work with professionals from companies like Jacobs Engineering. The organization also collaborates with the Undergraduate Research at Dallas College for students not planning to transfer to a university. Membership in the STEM League is free.
Karen Beltran, an outreach specialist with the STEM League, works with the STEM coordinator to assist students in achieving their career goals. Beltran encourages students to join the organization.
“STEM League has no limit on joining and is a district-wide organization. We oversee all the Dallas College campuses,” Beltran said.
The STEM League offers both online and in-person participation. While STEM meetings are currently held online, the organization posts STEM cell chats online. Meeting times have been adjusted to 6-7 p.m., changed from the previous 1-2 p.m. slot, to accommodate students’ work schedules and personal commitments.
“Maybe being in a lab wasn’t for me. It was being with students and helping them grow throughout their academic journey,” Beltran added.
Cindy Williams, a current STEM League member pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering, highlighted the organization’s benefits.
She mentioned opportunities such as field trips, scholarships and job opportunities. Williams believes that participating in the STEM League is reassuring and helpful for students pursuing STEM fields.
She offered a positive perspective on the organization’s impact.
