First look: The Apple Vision Pro headset

Juan Garza, Staff Writer | February 17, 2024
Apple’s new mixed-reality headset promises to push the world of consumer tech into the future, but when push comes to shove, is their newfangled gizmo worth the pretty penny? Apple is notorious for creating and implementing “old” technology and praising it as the pinnacle of modern engineering; their most recent example of this is with the advent of USB-C in the new iPhone 15, even though smartphones and computers have been using them for years. Now, they’re finally breaking into the...

The best little video game in Texas

Jesse Serrano, Staff Writer | May 2, 2023
Dallas College Richland Campus can claim the title of having made the best video game in Texas. It was quite the whirlwind of events to say the least. When Christopher Curra sent an email to us students searching for volunteers for a SkillsUSA competition in Houston, it was the first time anyone had heard of the event or association. No one had any idea of what to expect, advisers included.

Hogwarts Legacy is not so magical

Hogwarts Legacy is not so magical

Tareakubore Ejovwo-Ottoh, Staff Writer | March 7, 2023
Hogwarts Legacy is a nice pastime for all, but it’s just like any other open-world game there is. I don’t have much experience with Harry Potter games, but this one was a welcome surprise that allowed me to dive headfirst into the world of books and grow along with the characters in the game. The game aims to make up your character and play as a fifth-year at Hogwarts, completing quests and leveling up your gear as you discover new experiences. The characters, both major and minor, have a different variety of personalities and interests, and the teachers are a small but steady part of the experience. However, there are many issues with the game as well.

Review: Steam Deck is Valve’s answer to the Nintendo Switch

Jason Ryer, Staff Writer | November 30, 2022

For decades gamers have seen Valve as a game developer and as a publisher with the content platform Steam. Recently Valve got into the game console market with the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck functions as a portable handheld tablet in that the user can play games from their Steam account as well as use software from the account, such as Google Chrome.

The pricing for a Steam Deck depends on how much the consumer wants to spend on a SSD drive before a SD card is factored into the purchase. This does change the build of the device and the overall features that it can do. This review covers a 512 GB Steam Deck, which is $700 USD with taxes.

Games and playability on the go is a big draw on a Steam Deck as well as a Nintendo Switch with the Steam Deck having a slight upper hand in performance to an original generations Switch.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel ‘pay-to-win’ wall intimidates new players

May 12, 2022

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is an interesting free-to-play game for most modern consoles. It takes the concept of playing the card game and adds all the modern features of past variations of the franchise so than older players and current players can enjoy the game.

Under the hood, though, the game is unique because players can feel the wide array of depth the series has. Each new duel that I played has been a different theme or monster type. Some monster types are more popular than others, but Master Duel is really good at showcasing the appeal of the card game.

That being said, this game has an if it’s not broke don’t fix it quality.

‘Doom Eternal’ is anger personified

February 9, 2022

You’re in a mech suit with a bunch of guns and you’re on a mission to save Earth from the might of Hell itself. That’s pretty much the premise of “Doom Eternal,” the sequel to “Doom” (2016).

“Doom Eternal” does its wonders as it has so many parts that in a way, are excellent. Let’s begin with the first thing that everyone will see, the gameplay. The game does not let players have a cakewalk and, in a way, forces players out of their s comfort zone.

‘The Contract’ for ‘Grand Theft Auto Online’ ends up succeeding

January 26, 2022

Eight years after the release of “Grand Theft Auto V” and its multiplayer counterpart, “Grand Theft Auto Online,” we get a multi- player DLC as “The Contract” with one of the protagonists of the story, Franklin Clinton. With Franklin returning to the multiplayer scene as a man who’s gone from hustling in dime-bag drug dealing, robberies and illegal car repossession to being a top businessman who helps the wealthy elite of Los Santos with their problems that may have some criminal nature.

These problems are side missions for the player and can be entertaining. Although some missions are dull since they make you tail someone in a vehicle for some time, they are generally engaging as they put you straight into the action.

For better or worse, Pokémon remake faithful

December 14, 2021

“Pokémon Brilliant Diamond” and “Pokémon Shining Pearl,” released Nov.19, come straight forward in remaking the DS “Pokémon Diamond” and “Pokémon Pearl” games of 2006 to even the smallest detail.

The story hits beat by beat that of the original games and there isn’t much in regard to story improvements for "Brilliant Diamond” and “Shining Pearl.” What you see is what you get; A classic approach for Pokémon as a whole. Those expecting “Pokémon Emerald” content to be used as a finalized definitive Pokémon Generation 4 experience may be disappointed, though. That is not to say the game hasn’t added new things to make the game stand out from the DS titles. The first of which being the controversial chibi, smaller model, art style for the overworld which takes some time to get used to since the camera is in the same angles as the DS games for most of the overworld travel. Battles are set in a more traditional style of 3D over a 2d to a locked-in-place 3D background that Pokémon is known for.
