The Richland Campus Thunderducks delivered a dramatic close as they ended the season in their latest 11-a-side matchup on Nov. 1st. They claimed a 6–2 victory over Dallas College Mountain View after turning what seemed to be a troubling first half into a dominant finish. Led by captain Dubbie Cannon, the Thunderducks started hard, finished harder and showed the tenacity that defines their team spirit.
The opening half was a real test of Richland’s defense as they worked to find their footing. About 40 minutes in, however, the Thunderducks regained momentum and rhythm. Midfielders controlled the tempo, while Edgar Chavelas and Alexis Cruz drove the offense with dynamic ball movement and clever runs.
Defenders Bobby Murphy and Daniel Espana anchored the back line steadily, breaking up attacks and keeping the opposition from capitalizing on early chances. There was never a crack in their wall of defense. Despite visible frustration over fouls and officiating calls, the Thunderducks maintained their composure and fought back with intensity and sportsmanship.
The match reached its turning point when, without warning what looked to be a draw turned into a disguised attack late in the game. With 12 minutes left, with an assist Alexis Cruz scored Richland’s fourth goal, breaking through a tight defensive wall. Moments later, at 8:58, Cruz found the net again, and a final strike at 0:58s sealed the 6–2 win.
Richland’s starting lineup featured Victor Gomez, Bobby Murphy, Daniel Espana, Mazin Saeed, Charles Chimezie, Jose Diaz, Louis Gallagos, Edgar Chavelas, Vicente Mo and Cruz.
This win advanced the team to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in New York. At press time, the team is playing in the Championship’s semifinals against Finger Lakes Community College. Final results will be available at rlcsports.com.
