Ireland’s Rory McIlroy made golf history on April 12, becoming just the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters Tournament titles.
This is the first consecutive win since Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2001.
McIlroy secured his first Masters victory last year after a high-stakes playoff against England’s Justin Rose.
That breakthrough victory also completed McIlroy’s career Grand Slam.
This makes him the sixth player to achieve the feat, joining legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
He is the first European and only the second international player, alongside South Africa’s Player, to accomplish this milestone.
In this year’s tournament, McIlroy beat out American golfer Scottie Scheffler by one stroke under traditional scoring.
Scheffler, a Dallas resident, won the Masters in 2022 and 2024.
McIlroy posted to the social media platform Instagram after his win, saying, “Winning a second Masters is incredibly special and would not have been possible without the people who have supported me along the way.”
With this victory, McIlroy now has a chance to make history again.
The Masters is the first of golf’s four major championships, followed by the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June and The Open Championship in July.
He now has the opportunity to pursue a rare double career Grand Slam, an achievement previously accomplished only by Nicklaus and Woods.
