85°C Bakery Cafe started with a simple vision; allowing all of the joys of a luxury bakery, but without the cost. Founder. Cheng-Hsueh Wu found in 2003 how joyful a good coffee or baked good could be to somebody. He wanted to make this enjoyable experience affordable to all. This was the start of 85°C Bakery Cafe. With now over 1,000 85°C Bakery Cafe locations worldwide, this bakery has proven to be a hit among many people. Richland students in particular are able to enjoy this bakery due to its short distance from the school at 400 North Greenville Ave.
The custard bun is one of the most popular at 85°C Bakery Cafe. This baked good is super soft and moist with a pudding-like custard in the center. This would be a good breakfast baked good if you are looking for something sweet. This one is sure to be a go-to for the many customers of this establishment.
The Hokkaido Custard bun was our next try. This one ended up being Taylor’s favorite out of the baked goods. It is just the right balance of sweet and creamy.
This bun is filled with both a custard and a cream filling that can be described as a homemade whipped cream. This bun is super soft and moist and can easily be pulled apart. It is topped with powdered sugar which gives it a nice sweetness balance with the bun. Taylor would consider this bun to be more of a dessert due to its sweetness.
Lastly, Taylor’s overall favorite was the strawberry de leche drink. That was the first drink she tried from 85°C and was very pleased. This drink tastes exactly like the Helados strawberry pop. It was very creamy and sweet with chunks of strawberries added to it. The creaminess of the drink paired perfectly with the strawberry and overall made an amazing drink.
If you’re in the mood for something savory, the Garlic Cheese bread is a solid choice. It has a soft and sweet bread base topped with cheese and garlic. Since the bread was sweet, it combined nicely with the salty cheese and garlic. One drawback is that they do not warm up the pastries for you. Seeing as this is a traditionally warm dish, Jillian believes it would have been even more tasty had it been warmed up. We gave the garlic cheese bread a B rating.
The final food item we had was the mango delight. We had very high hopes for this dessert as it is very pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately, it did not live up to our expectations. The dessert is jelly on the outside with a sponge-like cake in the middle. The flavor was good, with it tasting like real mango, as opposed to artificial flavoring. However, the texture is where it dropped. The moist cake and jelly outside combined to make an overly soft texture that was unpleasant to us. We gave this item a D rating.
The peach green tea with boba should definitely be on your list if you’re looking for something refreshing and sweet.
The tea itself is not overly sweet and still has that peachy tang. The boba was perfectly cooked with it not being too soft or firm, and was soaked in a honey mix which made for another sweet addition in the drink. Overall this drink received an A rating.
85°C Bakery Cafe is a great spot to stop by if you are looking for a snack, drink or a whole meal.
All of the bakery items come prepackaged so if you’re in a hurry or you want something for later you can easily grab and go. If you need a group hangout or study spot 85°C Bakery Cafe has many seats and tables available. Since ordering is mostly self-serve and payment is at the counter, interaction with staff is minimal but pleasant.
