A Texas U.S. Congress representative is facing censure for comments made regarding Gov. Greg Abbott in a recent interview.
Democratic representative Jasmine Crockett, who has represented Texas’ 30th district since January 2023, was criticized for her remarks at the Human Rights Campaign in Los Angeles, California, where she seemingly mocked the Republican governor’s wheelchair-bound condition. It began when a large oak tree fell on his back and left him paralyzed from the waist down at 26 years old, according to Abbott’s website.
“Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now,” said Crockett, referring to the State of Texas. “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey!
Abbott responded to the comments in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, saying, “It’s another day and another disaster by the Democrats. The reality is, they have no vision, no policy. They have nothing to sell but hate, and Americans are not buying it.”
Crockett additionally came under fire earlier regarding her comments made about Sen. Ted Cruz in an extended interview with NBC Dallas Fort-Worth, where she said Cruz “has to be knocked over the head,” referring to her aforementioned metaphor in the interview of Democrats needing to “punch” against their opponents in order to win elections in Texas. In response, Cruz posted a gif on X of the character Inigo Montoya from Rob Reiner’s “The Princess Bride” saying, “You keep using that word. … I do not think it means what you think it means.”
On March 26, Texas congressperson Randy Weber introduced a censure resolution against the democratic representative. A censure is a formal statement of disapproval that is adopted with a majority vote, according to the U.S. Senate. It is generally in the form of a resolution. Crockett issued a written statement to Fox News 4, where she said that her comments on Abbott were not due to his condition, but rather due to his use of planes, automobiles and trains to transfer migrants to Black communities.
“Literally the next line I said was that he was a Hot A– Mess referencing his terrible policies,” said Crockett. “Never at any time did I reference his condition. So now, I am even more appalled that the people who unequivocally support Trump, who is known for racially insensitive nicknames & mocking the uniquely abled, are outraged.”
