Dallas College Student Life and Engagement hosted its second annual student leadership Sneaker Ball awards banquet at the Frontiers of Flight Museum on May 1.
The event showcased students on a red carpet with a mini-fashion entrance, highlighting their sneaker style and celebrating expression, design and what makes their kicks special.
Aside from the red-carpet treatment, the event aimed to uplift, support and recognize the commitment and dedication of students who put in the effort in their leadership roles across various events and programs for the student body throughout the year.
Prior to the banquet, the Student Government Association swore in its newly elected presidents and officers for the 2026-2027 academic year. The ceremony marked the formal passing of the gavel and included the induction of the college’s first-ever online SGA student board. Isabel Hernandez said, “Being inducted at the Sneaker Ball was a truly beautiful and memorable experience for me. It’s wonderful to see our thriving online student community represented this year with online SGA.
Student Life Director Frankie Ward said about the event’s theme, Soar Beyond Limits-Where Resilient Leaders Take Flight.
“Nothing can stop a Dallas College student, and tonight’s turnout shows that our students are ready to step up and lead the way,” said Ward.
Dallas College Chancellor Dr. Justin Lonon praised the students for their leadership and commitment. “It’s always an incredible opportunity to come together and see the best and brightest students who represent Dallas College so well,” Lonon said.
“Many of these students I’ve gotten to know well, and I’m excited to see them all decked out-in their sneakers, gowns, and suits. I’m really proud and excited for their future.”
“I want to encourage all students, especially our first-generation students, not to fear trying new clubs and making a community impact as they grow,” Veronica Leal, Student Life director, said.
She aims to “encourage all students-particularly first-generation students-to step outside their comfort zones by joining new clubs on campus and engaging in initiatives that positively impact the community as they grow.”
Awarded the Chancellor’s Award and named Student Leader of the Year at Richland, Kent Ho reflected on his achievement with humility, emphasizing service over recognition.
“Work as hard as you can. It’s not about the accolades,” Ho said.
“You do this for your fellow students. The true reward is the commitment, energy and effort you’re willing to invest and pour into your community for the greater good.”
