The Counseling and Psychological Services department provides support to students across all Dallas College campuses. The department offers workshops designed to enhance student skills. These workshops address topics such as test anxiety and academic success. The aim is to assist students in overcoming obstacles and to provide guidance on scholarship opportunities. Faculty within the counseling department aim to support student success and facilitate transfer to universities.
Students can schedule appointments with counselors via email, in-person requests or through the Navigate app. The faculty advocates for student choice in scheduling.
“We have one of the best teams of any counseling psychological services in Texas,” said Louis Whatley, a counselor at the Richland Campus.
The counseling department does not provide diagnoses. Instead, counselors refer students to external services when necessary. These resources are provided at no cost. The department also facilitates care team referrals, enabling students to report concerns about classmates who may need assistance. Students can also submit care team referrals for themselves. The care team referral form is available on the Dallas College website. The counseling department conducts classroom presentations to inform students about available resources and to mention that these resources and services are free to all.
In addition to counseling services, Dallas College provides a food pantry to assist students experiencing food insecurity. At the Richland campus, the food pantry is located. They can guide students to the room. Students can access the pantry by signing in with their student ID. Students are permitted to select two food items per day. The food pantry was established during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to operate to address student needs. The pantry offers shelf-stable groceries, frozen items such as meat and fruits and water. An Amazon wish list, accessible via QR code, allows faculty and students to donate items. The pantry prioritizes the provision of ramen, canned goods and hygiene products. The food pantry seeks to ensure students receive assistance and encourage donations. The pantry advocates consideration for others and ensures that all students are taken care of and their well-being.
