On Sept. 4, Colt Gray, 14, used an AR-15 style rifle for a mass shooting at Apalachee High School, right outside of Atlanta. America mourns for the four people — two 14-year-old students and two teachers — who lost their lives and the nine people who were injured and hospitalized. All of the injured are suspected to survive, sources said.
According to FBI Atlanta, the shooter was questioned by law enforcement last year along with his father, Colin Gray, 54, after Colt Gray made threats online to commit a school shooting, but there was no cause for arrest at the time.
America is clutching its pearls trying to get a grasp on how to manage the school shooting trend. There is a thin line between gun control and going against the Second Amendment. Critics say, however, whenever there is a school shooting, lobbyists try to pass laws to ban guns. They say the parents of the shooters should be arrested to hold someone accountable for the heinous and nightmarish crimes their children commit.
James and Jennifer Crumbley were convicted of involuntary manslaughter this year, according to the Associated Press. Their arrest was for the high school shooting which took place at Oxford High School in a Detroit exurb in 2021. This arrest made history. It was the first time a parent was held responsible for a school shooting their child committed. The parents claim to not have known their child was planning to commit murder; but prosecutors said there were ignored signs leading up to the shooting. “Actions and inactions were inexorably intertwined,” the Michigan Court of Appeals said in 2023 when the historic case was allowed to be heard.
Colin Gray, the father of Colt Gray, was arrested for aggravated assault. According to the Associated Press, the elder Gray knew his son had the assault rifle and did not alert authorities or warn the school. Although the 14-year-old shooter is being charged as an adult; sources question. Should arresting the parents be standard in cases such as these? They question: Will that help solve the major problem of school shootings. The victims killed during the Apalachee High School shooting will remain in our thoughts:
Mason Schermerhorn, 14
Christian Angelo, 14
Richard Aspinwall, 39, a teacher
Christina Irimie, 53, a teacher
See something, say something.
In most school shootings, students notice red flags about the proposed shooter long before the violent action takes place. If you notice someone acting strange, making threats or bragging about weapons, say something. Your life may depend on it.
