The merging of fashion and sports has been referred to as the dream team, the perfect fit and even the perfect match.
Call it as you wish, it goes without saying that in recent years fashion has become much more prominent in the world of sports. Be it on or off the court, field or track. Fashion plays a significant role in the world of sports from both a business perspective but most importantly, in terms of an athlete’s self-expression.
When I think of sports and fashion, the first thing that comes to mind is the 2024 Paris Olympics. Hosted in the city many would consider the capital of fashion; the 2024 Paris Olympics showcased how two major industries have beautifully and stylistically merged. Leading to the start of the games, Vogue hosted its annual Vogue World event showcasing and celebrating sports and fashion. Athletes making an appearance in the fashion show consisted of the likes of Serena Williams dressed in an Off-White gown to Joe Burrow dressed in a Peter Do backless blazer. It is safe to say their fashionable presence co-exists both on and off the court and field.
During the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament, Serena William debuted two custom Off-White x Nike collaboration outfits designed by the late Virgil Abloh.
The beautifully designed and ballerina-inspired outfits matched Williams’ striking style both on and off the court. While not only stylistically beautiful, the outfits were also most importantly functional. This in many ways can be seen as a perfect example of the merging of fashion and sports.
From the Paris Olympics to the U.S. Open, the prominence of the merging of fashion and sports has not gone unseen by Richland Campus student athletes. When asked if the merging of sports and fashion should continue, Lorial Allen, a second-year student athlete at Richland said, “When brands and designers work together, they make clothes that look good and still work for the game. It also lets athletes show their personality and brings more flavor to the game.”
Similar to Williams’ U.S. Open outfits, the importance of functional sport fashion lies at the forefront. In response to whether there is a prominent presence or importance of fashion in sports, Hope Ortiz, a Richland freshman student athlete with the volleyball team said, “Yes, we love this saying “look good, feel good, do good.” The future of sports and fashion is something that is both incredibly exciting in terms of the sport industry but, most importantly, in terms of the athletes and their ability of utilizing self-expression through fashion. From Paris to Richland, the importance of sports and fashion do not go unseen and as described by the student athletes, some might argue that the merging of the two industries is a perfect match.
