I didn’t hate or have a distaste for “Snow White,” the remake of the 1937 Disney animated classic, like many have. One thing director Marc Webb and the screenwriters made clear is that they left the seven dwarfs out of the title for a reason. It’s all about Snow White now.
It’s a movie I don’t think I’ll ever watch again. “Snow White” has one thing I don’t like in movies: endless singing. The “Cinderella” live action remake with Kenneth Branagh at the helm in 2015 did it right. It might have had a song or two, but it wasn’t a crux of the storyline.
Gal Gadot usually plays a good character in the “Wonder Woman” fantasy adventures. In “Snow White,” she portrays the Evil Queen and she’s rotten to the apple core. In fact, she’s vicious and an outright jerk.
Rachel Zegler, who plays the title character, also co-starred in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning “West Side Story” update in 2021. She’s actually fine here. Zegler is a good actress, but for some reason she appears to have a chip, not a bluebird on her shoulder.
She didn’t annoy me or bother me at all in her performance, though. And the fact that she’s not a white person makes no difference to me. It’s a moot point.
The seven dwarfs are not human this time around. Their sneezing, falling asleep and grumpy heigh-hos are computer generated. We first meet them when Snow White wanders into their house and settles in for a giant power nap on one of their beds.
The Mouse House, aka Disney, can’t go back to the classic animation vault over and over to squeeze a dime out of consumers like you and me just for the sake of having semi-new product. Disney tried to cash in twice last year with “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Moana 2,” which was a piece of poo.
Do not waste your time and hard-earned money on “Snow White.” It’ll be on TV soon enough.
