Friendsgiving, the modern spinoff of Thanksgiving brings people together with their chosen family – whether due to travel limitations, strained family relationships or just wanting to have a good time with others. It’s a good alternative for those seeking to celebrate gratitude and connection with a potluck-style feast this November.
On Nov. 20, Richland Student Media hosted a Friendsgiving during their general meeting, featuring an odd twist—pizza and cookies took the place of the traditional turkey and pie.
Shiza Siddiqui, a student at Richland Campus and member of student media, said she liked the idea of Friendsgiving.“Friendsgiving is a way for people to experience the joy of Thanksgiving even when your family isn’t with you,” she said.
Thanksgiving is a widely acknowledged holiday in America,. Richland Campus has a diverse community full of students from various cultural backgrounds, many of whom have their own unique twist on Thanksgiving.
Siddiqui said, “We have family close by, so we have the aunts come over. But instead of turkey, my family prefers rotisserie chicken.”
“Overall, I’d say the way we celebrate is pretty similar to the traditional American Thanksgiving.”
