Founded in 1972, Richland College was established in the former Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD); previously known as Dallas County Junior College District (DCJCD).
Janet James, senior director of campus administration, spoke about the history of Richland, and how the campus is embodied through its beauty.
The location was picked with the intent of being conveniently located within 20 minutes of every Dallas County resident. Additionally, this location held farmland and was surrounded by natural beauty. Along with the natural beauty came a great amount of wildlife. Turtles, geese, ducks and squirrels are all prominently found on campus. Most of these have always been on campus, with the ducks being the inspiration behind the name “Thunderducks”. One long-term goal of Richland’s was to preserve the abundance of nature that it held. This goal was achieved and is still cherished by many, 52 years later.
“We just take great pride in the grounds,” James said, adding, “When we do that, it’s so that when students come, they feel valued. They feel like somebody cares about them.” The intentions of Dallas College were clear; they wanted a welcoming environment provided to every student that walked through their doors.
Furthermore, James discussed how far Richland has come since she started in 1997. Thunderduck, Red River, and Sabine halls are all additions that were not originally part of the campus at its founding. Thunderduck hall was created with the intention of being Richland’s “front door” to house admissions, success coaches and many other resources; a place where students could achieve all their needs in one spot.
As the anniversary of the Dallas College merger approaches, there is a question of how Richland has changed since the merger. This decision to unite all campuses was made to improve the student experience and streamline operations to one central power. Since the shift in 2020, the environment has changed for both students and staff alike.
The power dynamic has shifted to efficiently assist anyone at any Dallas College campus. Many staff members now hold responsibilities over many campuses, unlike before. The merger has proven to be a positive change for Dallas College as it grows. As time goes on, Richland holds a long-term goal to continue their efforts with being a part of Dallas College.
