The Richland Campus offers a range of career and technical enrichment programs designed to help students succeed both in their studies and future careers. SkillsUSA is a standout among these programs. It offers students a chance to participate in competitions, showcase their skills and connect with industry professionals.
In the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, Richland students excelled, winning a gold medal for community action project, a silver medal for chapter business procedure, another silver medal for chapter display and a bronze medal for customer service. Noeli Biggs, senior manager for Special Academics Programs, is encouraging students to ask their advisers and faculty about the competition. “Students can learn that SkillsUSA is part of the career and technical programs, which also include other competitions and events, where we are aiming to win,” Mrs. Biggs said.
In addition to SkillsUSA, Dallas College has other opportunities such as the Texas A&M Commerce competition titled Hexathon. These programs provide hands-on experience and prepare students for the competitive job market. Events like these also serve as valuable networking opportunities, where major business industries are present, often scouting for potential hires. It’s a chance for students to dress for success, bring their business cards and make a lasting impression.
Students interested in these opportunities can visit the Special Academic Programs (SAP) office. Faith Rachel, a SAP staff member, is available to provide information and guidance to help students get involved. As Mrs. Biggs put it, “Her door is always open, and she’s more than happy to help.” The office is a welcoming space for those looking to learn more about what is available to them.
For students, these programs are more than just competitions. They are gateways to internships, jobs and networking opportunities. Major business industries are often present at these events, which makes it an opportunity for students to portray their skills and professionalism. “It’s the place to go to succeed,” Mrs. Biggs said. Students are encouraged to explore these programs and take full advantage of the resources and support available to them. Whether it’s gaining new skills, competing at a high level or connecting with industry professionals, Dallas College’s career services are here to help students reach their goals.
