Dallas College is introducing its new initiative, the SPACE program, which stands for Student Programs and Campus Engagement. This program is designed to elevate the student experience by empowering members to influence and shape campus events and activities. SPACE is committed to creating an energetic campus environment through engaging programs that reflect the interests and needs of the student body.
As a SPACE member, students have a big role in student life, which includes creativity, leadership and service within the Office of Student Life and Engagement. By participating, students have the opportunity to develop a variety of skills, some of which are communication, time management, negotiation, creative project management, technical skills, and critical thinking. “I honestly see SPACE to be a very fun environment for students besides learning all the time to have a break from everything” said Diane Uche, a Richland student and a SPACE mission specialist.
The SPACE program focuses on several key priorities: delivering large-scale, engaging, cost-free events that serve as a break from academic pressures, and establishing a programming board with regional and national recognition. It plans to embrace values of creativity, engagement and collaboration. Each Dallas College campus has students in the positions of commander, mission specialists and space cadets.
Being a member offers many benefits, including professional development through hands-on experience in event planning, budget management and marketing; leadership growth through specialized training sessions and team projects; and the chance to make a significant impact on campus.
“Our expectations for our first semester at Richland Campus is to put our name out there. We want to collaborate with other organizations to build a good base”, said Marcus Miranda, Richland’s SPACE Commander.
One of the Mission Specialists, Omolola Giwa, also expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s my first time joining a student organization like this, so I’m expecting a lot.” To be eligible, students must be enrolled at Dallas College with a minimum of nine credit hours, maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, not be on disciplinary or academic probation and be available for summer training and regular meetings.
Interested students can learn more about the program and how to get involved by attending one of the upcoming informational sessions. Join them on Sept. 12 at Dallas College Richland Campus, Sept. 17 at Dallas College Eastfield Campus or Sept. 19 at Dallas College North Lake Campus, all at 11:00 am.
