Dallas College is adding three new holidays to its academic calendar, beginning with the 2024-25 academic year. The recent decision by the Board of Trustees recognizes Veterans Day, Cesar Chavez Day and Juneteenth as important holidays that deserve to be honored.
The approval ensures that these holidays will be officially recognized moving forward, with the college adapting its schedule to maintain compliance with minimum contact hour requirements for courses. When one of these holidays falls on a weekend, Dallas College plans to observe it on the preceding Friday rather than the following Monday. This adjustment is particularly designed to protect the schedules of classes that meet on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Veterans Day, often observed nationwide to honor military service members, will now hold a formal place on the Dallas College calendar. Ryan Lee, a veteran and a Richland student, expressed his gratitude for that decision. “It’s a great show of respect for not just students who were in the military, but for teachers and professors as well.”
Similarly, Cesar Chavez Day will commemorate the influential labor leader and civil rights activist. Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, is a recognition of diverse historical milestones.
Students have already expressed their enthusiasm for the changes. “It’s nice to have a few extra days off. I feel like a lot of people who attend community college usually have a lot on their plate during their daily lives, so it’s good to have more time to let off some steam,” Reyna Miera, a Richland student and business major, said.
The revised 2024-25 academic calendar now features these additional holidays, and the college community will soon have the opportunity to experience the benefits of these new observances firsthand.
